As you may or may not be aware, as a result of the courts opening during the blizzard that occurred on Jan. 4, 2018, employees who came to work that day received minute for minute comp time for the time that they were on the clock. Employees who took Emergency Annual Leave that day were each credited with two hours of comp time. You should also know that Suffolk County Court Employees are the only court employees in the downstate region who received any type of compensation for the blizzard.
We filed a grievance because we believe that our members were not compensated properly. That grievance is currently at Step 2. Before we proceed with the grievance, I just want everyone to understand that if we lose the grievance we could very well lose the minute for minute comp time given to employees who came to work that day as well as the 2 hours comp time given to those who were on Emergency Annual Leave that day.
We will be polling our members electronically through Election Buddy within the next couple of weeks so that the members can guide us as to how they would like us to proceed. Each member will be asked to vote:
YES - if you would like us to proceed with the grievance with the knowledge that there is a risk of losing the time that we have already been compensated for the Blizzard.
NO - if you would like us to withdraw the grievance with the knowledge that we will keep the time that we have already been compensated for the Blizzard.
